John 4: 10 - 11
10 Jesus answered and said to her, “If you knew the gift of God, and who it is who says to you, ‘Give Me a drink,’ you would have asked Him, and He would have given you living water.” 11 The woman said to Him, “Sir, You have nothing to draw with, and the well is deep. Where then do You get that living water?
Here is an interesting extract from the conversation between Jesus and the Samaritan woman. Jesus said to the woman the following words, “If you knew the gift of God, and who it is who says to you…“. In fact the Samaritan woman did not realize the power or authority of the person who was speaking to her and had asked her for a drink. Jesus also might be turning her attention in the same lines.
But don’t we behave in a similar manner???
While praying we are conversing with God and we are hearing from God while reading the bible. We may also have numerous conversation with God at many instances of our day today life. But do we really realize the power and authority of the one we are speaking to? No, we don’t! So often, our faith is so constrained that we can’t believe in God’s power beyond a point.
The woman again goes on to put another interesting question at Jesus. In the conversation Jesus had promised to offer her living water, but He didn’t have a bucket or rope to draw the water! And how could Jesus go so ‘deep’ to get the living water? (She must have been sure the water near the surface isn’t living water, since she may have been drawing the same everyday and didn’t find any specialty in it.)
Quite natural question? Or may be some of you would think, it was a lame question?
Lame or not, some of us ask the same ‘lame questions’. We don’t realize what God is trying to tell us and we put forward our own theories about it! We tend to look at things from a humanly point of view and we are not able to comprehend the power of God.
The well may be deep and there may be no equipment to draw the water, but could you still believe that Jesus can provide you the living water? Imagine us putting all our difficulties on top of a table and explaining them one by one to Jesus. This is exactly what we do on receiving a promise instead of believing it.
This well might be the same well from which you drew the water yesterday and day before! But today with Jesus besides us, we are in for a unique experience! Its only a matter of faith!
May God enhance our faith and help us to drink the living water…
God bless you…
