11 I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance, but He who is coming after me is mightier than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.
13 Then Jesus came from Galilee to John at the Jordan to be baptized by him.
14 And John tried to prevent Him, saying, “I need to be baptized by You, and are You coming to me?”
15 But Jesus answered and said to him, “Permit it to be so now, for thus it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness.” Then he allowed Him.
We don’t often realize the value of something until we lose it or think of a situation without it. Let us analyse for a moment our status without the ‘cross’.
John was baptizing the people with water for repentance. In fact, Jesus who was without sin from birth did not require a ‘baptism of repentance’. Jesus was mightier than John in all respect and John himself has accepted that he is not worthy even to remove the sandals of Jesus.
Now sandal is something that everyone detests to touch because it has has come in direct contact with all the dirty things that came along our way. Sandal here symbolizes something that is ‘dirty’ or ‘unclean’. Now, if one must say that he is not ‘worthy’ to touch the sandal of another, it means he is ‘worst’ than the sandal of the other.
Here, John poses a question at Jesus that we may also have at this point:
“I have a need to be baptized by You, and do You come to me?“
But Jesus gave a classic reply to this:
“ it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness ”
The sentence says it all. Jesus was humble in everything, he didn’t see his greatness before men when he submitted himself before the Father.
Now the second question, who is John?
“And you, child, will be called the prophet of the Highest; For you will go before the face of the Lord to prepare His ways, “
So, John was the prophet of the Highest!
If the ‘prophet of the highest’ was ‘worst’ than the ‘sandals’ of Jesus,
How low is our place????
We should realize at this instant how much ‘unclean’ we are before God. Every moment we need to confess our sins and have a repentant heart before God. Jesus didn’t have any need of a ‘repentance’, still he took the ‘baptism of repentance’ to fulfill all righteousness.
Yes, today if you are worthy to stand in the presence of God, it is because He paid the price for us on the cross. He was perfect, but He suffered on the cross to make us perfect. We were the lowest of lowest, but He shed His last drop of blood to take us to be in glory with Him.
Value the ‘eternal gift’ you have received…
Lead a humble and pure life before God…
God bless you…
